C.S. Lewis On Atheism

When I was an atheist a Christian friend sent me several books by C.S. Lewis (1898 – 1963). Lewis was a great writer, as well as an academic, a philosopher, and lay theologian. I remember being impressed by the fact that my friend spent $60 or so bucks on books and shipped them to me. That, probably more than what I read, made an impact. Read More >>

The Facebook Prophets

I see a lot of wisdom passed around on Facebook. It may come in the form of a quote or an image that majestically radiates the profound words of someone, somewhere, at some point in time. I like a lot of the quotes, although many are self-focused and self-serving. What these prophetic voices lack though is a foundation. Read More >>

Don’t Cut Off Any Ears

I was watching a Bill Moyers interview with Vietnam veteran Karl Marlantes. Marlantes was describing the killing that went on during the war. He talked about how they dehumanized the enemy, which made it much easier to put a bullet in their head. Read More >>

The Myth Of WWJD

WWJD? What, indeed, would Jesus do? The sentiment behind this slogan, while admirable, misses some critical points. The spirit behind the sentiment assumes that it has worth by itself in the life and ministry of a Christian. Worth here is defined as real change, impact, power, and real action. In this light, this slogan is lacking. Read More >>

The Comeback Church

In many respects the Christian Church appears to be splitting at the seams. Foundational doctrine is being questioned. The Christian right is getting hammered by a rapidly growing  and diverse Christian left, fueled in large part by a well-connected Christian LGBT community. Church attendance continues to fall. More and more are speaking out against Church policies and beliefs. Add to this a generation reared on skepticism, consumerism, Google, FaceBook, and Twitter, and you’ve got serious change ahead. The Promise

Jesus, on the most important day of Jewish Festival of Tabernacles, stands up and makes quite an announcement (a promise). He shouts, Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. Ah, okay….

God – Where The Heck Is He?

A big objection to God is quite obvious – where the heck is he? While most believe God is spirit and therefore not visible, we should at least see him working more in our lives, right? I mean we’re down here slogging it out in the trenches. Can’t God show us some love? Read More >>

Tim Keller – Christians And Homosexuals

I’ve been reading up on the gay issue in the context of Christianity. It’s a fascinating discussion. On one extreme, you have folks screaming that gays (anyone in the LGBT community) are going to hell. On the other, they’re accepted as full brothers in Christ. That’s quite a spectrum in the same religion. What to do? Read More >>

Freedom Not Religion

A man has to undergo a long and fierce inner struggle before he learns fully to master himself, and to direct his whole love towards God. When a man relies on himself, he often comes to rely on human consolations Read More >>

Discovering True Freedom

We are inundated with messages of the “self.” Find yourself. Be yourself. Discover yourself. Trust yourself. A lot of it is good, inspiring, even encouraging. However, underneath these messages is a belief that this is true freedom, and apparently we’re missing it. Read More >>
