I Hear You Culture

come-all-you-who-are-wearyI hear you calling me. Calling me to be free. To live abundantly. To break the shackles of “religious” thinking. To free my mind to explore all the universe has to offer me. You’re very good at what you do. You strike the core of our emptiness and longing. But you’re a liar.

You’re not real. You’re not Truth, though you make us think you are. You play with the lives that belong only to the Living One, making empty promises and forcing people to strive for identity and meaning, rather than thrive with God.

You tell us we can build our own foundations, make our own rules, create our own self, yet your rationale for such wonders is baseless, groundless. You have no personality – literally. You’re dead. But oh what a smoke screen you create with your “superior” spiritual language, tickling our rebellious desires for wealth, fame, success, love, relationship, completion.

You have us cry out in rebellion for our freedom, neglecting the One that gives us the very breathe we take when we shout such nonsense. You teach us to seek and worship our own desires and passions rather than those that the Master has custom crafted for us. Oh culture, obedience is ugly in your eyes (unless it’s to yourself). Faithfulness is foolishness (unless it’s to yourself). Self-sacrifice is admirable (but only when it soothes you).

You seek with self-interest. You live for yourself. You’re a pawn of the devil.

Don’t you see you’re drowning in your self-focus? You thirst for a love so profound, so life-changing, so merciful, and full of grace; yet, when pure grace is offered through Jesus you recoil as if from a hot flame, falling back to your own futile efforts.

Despite the strength of your cries and screams of truth, there is a whisper that is Power, that is Life, that is Truth. Oh the scandal, you cry, but He’s the only Way. The way God intended to bring you home. Call on Him. Believe on Him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” ~ Jesus (Matthew 11:28-30, NIV)
