Have You Tried This?

rejoice-alwaysHave you tried this? This comes from Paul, Jesus’ main church planter. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

That’s a heck of a thing to say, isn’t it? There is no middle of the road, like “Gee, I know you’re having some struggles, and your anxious about this or that.” It’s, “Hey, here’s God’s will for you in Christ – rejoice always (not sometimes, always). Why? Because He reigns.

Oh, and keep praying – non-stop. Yes – non-stop. Why? Because your Father wants to talk with you, guide you, walk with you, strengthen you, fill you with His wisdom, transform you.

And yes, give thanks in ALL circumstances (not just the fun stuff), but even when it looks like you’re heading down a dead-end, over a cliff, when everything seems like disaster, when you can’t take it anymore, when you feel like you’re going to puke, when your standing in a boring supermarket line, when your kids are yelling at you, when you’re arguing with your wife about sex, again – give thanks.

Why? You’re alive, welcome to life – to the Kingdom. Now, stick with Me, I have great things in store. You have much growing to do.”

  1. Thank you for this encouragement, Ted. How easy to forget the “always” part of rejoicing. But it’s a worthy practice.

    • Thanks, Debra…this post was inspired by an email from a friend. He had 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 pasted at the bottom of his email. I looked it up and began to reflect on it afresh – it’s really amazing.
