How Can You Be Happy – Wade In

One of my favorite quotes comes from Fridtjof Nansen – explorer, scientist, humanitarian (1861–1930). He notes: “Never stop because you are afraid – you are never so likely to be wrong.”

I have stopped because I was afraid too many times. The result – I never enjoyed the fruits of what could have been. This is a horrible feeling. The memory of it is a powerful reminder to push on.

Here’s an example. I want to write a book. I know the topic well. I have the general points, but I don’t write it. I’m afraid, overwhelmed. It’s so much work. What if people don’t like it? What if I get half way through and realize it stinks? What if I lose interest?

Without having written a word, I’ve failed. This is tragic.

What does it look like when I do push on?  I wish I had more examples, but here’s one. It’s not as impressive as Fridjof’s life story, but it “could” be, someday.

Several years back I was intrigued by this new “Internet thing.” I knew very little. What did I do? I waded in. I read. I studied. A little each day. Then I built a website. Then I learned SEO. Then I learned how to write copy. The list goes on. Before I knew it, I was making money.

In fact, the skills that I learned from having “waded in” have lead to every subsequent opportunity and success to this day.

How do we trust enough to wade in? How do we get over the fear? In the case above, I prayed. I checked in with other people. I watched for the signs, and followed them.

How can you be happy? Wade in. See what happens.
